Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in a five set, 4 hr 54 minute match to win the 2012 US Open Men’s Singles final and his first grand slam title.

It was a windy day and both players toughed it out in tough conditions. The match was equal in length to the longest US Open match between Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl in 1988.

In his Runner Up speech, Djokovic, who receives an extra $500,000 prize money for finishing at the top of the Emirates US Open Series, said

Congratulations to Andy, he absolutely deserves it… this was a tremendous match to be part of

In his winner speech, Murray said

It was incredibly tricky conditions… great to have him (Lendl) helping me… not just him, everyone else has been there from the start.

I loved the songs that were played during the match. The players walked out to what sounded like the “Mission Impossible” theme and when Murray won they played the “Chariots of Fire theme and then “You make a grown man cry”.

The crowd were on their feet while Andy served for the match, including Sean Connery

What a great way to end the fan slam!

Until next time

Grand Slam Gal
