A fans eye view of Day 4 at the Australian Open.
By far the hottest AO day so far today. Not humid, but oven like heat that blankets around you. And it was still 27 degrees at half past midnight.
The Seeds
Women
- No.1 seed Victoria Azarenka defeated Eleni Daniilidou 6-1, 6-0 in 55 minutes.
- No.3 seed Serena Williams defeated Garbine Muguruza in straight sets 6-2,6-0. Serena loses a game for the first time this tournament. First game of the second set lasted 18 mins, 26 pts were played!
Men
- No. 2 seed Roger Federer d Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Federer’s bright pink laces and tongue to his shoes drew a lot of comments, but didn’t impede his progress.
- No. 3 seed Andy Murray d Joao Sousa in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-4
- No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Go Soeda 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 coming back from a break down in the second set in just over 2hrs.
More Notable Results
- Laura Robson d Petra Kvitova 2-6 6-3 11-9.
- Tsurenko d Gavrilova 7-5, 6-3 to go through to her first grand slam third round appearance. Read more.
- Raonic d Rosol in straight sets
- 42 year old Date-Krumm d Shahar Peer 6-2, 7-5. Read more.
On the Robson v Kvitova match from the Aus Open website
It was a match that had everything. Terrible tennis, excellent tennis, attritional tennis, error-strewn tennis. Rod Laver Arena was kept enthralled until well after midnight as Petra Kvitova and Laura Robson slugged away for three hours exactly in a manner reminiscent, albeit not in scoreline, of the infamous Isner v Mahut marathon, Robson eventually prevailing 2-6 6-3 11-9.
Aussie Players
- Bernard Tomic d Daniel Brands 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6. Tomic is now the last Aussie player in the singles draw and he’ll play the winner of tonight’s match between Federer and Daydenko in the third round.
- Blaz Kavic d wildcard James Duckworth in a massive hot five set match 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-7(3) 10-8. I’ll miss that quacking from the crowd during his matches. Read more.
Injuries
I’m pleased to say that injuries didn’t cause any retirements in singles matches today, although there was a retirement in a doubles match and I read that Kavcic is under medical supervision following his five set match with Duckworth.
Serena hit herself in the face with her racquet but is fine.
