One of the things that makes the Hopman Cup tournament unique and special is the prize that the winners receive.
2017 Update: The players no longer receive the diamond encrusted tennis balls. They have been replaced by beautiful tennis racquet based jewellery. I’m currently trying to find out how much the prize money is this year.
In 2012, the $USD 1,000,000 prize money was allocated based the number of group wins each team has during the round robin style event.
- Base compensation: $45,000
- Group wins: $10,000 each
- Runners Up: $20,000
- Winners: $50,000
By my calculations this means that each player in the winning team takes home $125,000.
In addition to the perpertual trophy, the winners also receive an individual trophy in the form of a magnificent Argyle Diamond encrusted pure silver tennis ball.
Nice little bonus!
Very nice indeed, and just the right size to slip into their hand luggage while traveling.
The diamonds went to the Czech Republic in 2012. In 2013, Spain won the final.
In 2014 France won the final. A mini diamond encrusted tennis racquet valued at $26,000 each made up part of the prize. I haven’t been able to confirm what the prize money allocation was this year.
