If you’re visiting New York for the US Open, check out these handy iPhone Apps.
US Open App
The USTA will continue to make its mobile apps for the iPhone and Android devices available. Fans can again enjoy all the action with live scores, stats, player profiles, video highlights, and alerts. New this year, fans using either App will be able to personalize their US Open experience, through My US Open presented by American Express to create a customized mobile experience tailored to fit their individual needs whether at home or at the Open.
USOpen.org also will be available in a mobile-friendly format for all web-enabled mobile devices, and fans can sign up for up to 250 different free mobile alerts, including scores, breaking news, and weather updates.
yelp for finding local businesses
Use yelp to find businesses that are nearby, including restaurants, bars, cafes, petrol stations and pharmacies. You can read reviews, find offers that are available when you “check in” somewhere and leave your own tips.
It has been recommended to look for 4 star places that have 500+ reviews.

Crosswalk NYC and other public transport information
This App has a subway map, which is helpful for finding out where you are once you’re on the subway, as not all platforms and trains have information about which stop is next. It also shows Service Advisories so you can check if there are delays to the lines that you’re planning to take.
I also like the mta.info website for checking for service status and www.hopstop.com (which also has an App) as been recommended for finding Public Transport directions.
OANDA Currency converter
This app easily converts your local currency in to USD, so you can work out how much things are costing you.
Tip Check Calculator
Knowing how much, and when to tip can be stressful if you’re from a non-tipping orientated country (like Australia!)
While in New York for restaurants etc I’ve been advised that it’s OK to double the Tax in order to work out how much to tip.
But if you’re interested in tipping more, or less, or not sure what other services you need to tip for, this App is a godsend. It lists different services that you should tip for, and then the amount that you tip each person based on their job.
It also shows the percentage of the bill to add if the service was fair, good or excellent and then has a calculator so you can work out the amount.
Do you know of any other iPhone Apps that are useful for visitors to New York? Please leave a comment and let me know.
Until next time

I also like Google+ Local for finding cafes, restaurants and bars. Having numerical Zagat scores makes it easy to see how places compare. Plus it is very easy to use.
