The Grand Slam of Cheese: New York

September 29, 2012 By grandslamgal

Info for cheesies visiting New York.

This year I made it part of my mission to taste the cheeses in each Grand Slam location, including Melbourne, Paris and Britain.

To complete the fan slam of cheese, here is some info about the cheeses I tasted while in New York.

I tried a few cheese platters while in New York. They were well presented and tasted OK but to be honest the quality of cheese didn’t really compare to that found in the other grand slam cities.

Cheeses at the cafe in MoMA

Cheeses at a cafe in Brooklyn

A lot of meals that we ordered came with cheese, sometimes in a way that we expected, and sometimes a bit too much, like the burrito with cheese pictured below, or when a burger comes with chips that are smothered with liquid cheese.

Am pretty sure we don't have "Cheese from a can" in Australia

On the recommendation of a friend we went to Dean and Deluca to check out their cheeses. I wasn’t disappointed.

They even had cheese from the Yarra Dairy in Melbourne, which was featured in the Melbourne Grand Slam of Cheese.

The man at the cheese counter in Dean and Deluca let us try a few different US cheeses.

The Nettle Meadow Kunik

And Grayson cheese, which on this blog was called the American Tallegio.

We enjoyed both cheeses at a picnic in Central Park, while watching the sun set.

And the winner was…. the soft creamy Kunik. The Grayson was nice too, with a strong flavour and a strong odour.

If you’re visiting New York and want to taste some cheese, try Dean and Deluca or Wholefoods Market which also has a large selection.

Until next time

Hey Sian – I learned pretty fast to avoid accidentally buying foods that turned out to be covered in Easy type Cheese. It’s a bit sickly for my liking when used in such great quantities. Thanks for the tip about Dean and Deluca too, their cheese section was delicious.

I took a photo of Easy Cheese when I was at the supermarket too! Can’t believe it exists.

There is definitely good cheese to be had in NY, but for general availability and price you can’t beat Paris.
