Highlights from the first week of the 2013 French Open

June 1, 2013 By grandslamgal

Highlights (good and bad) from week one of the French Open.

The French Open is nearly half way through. Although I haven’t been able to watch as many live matches on TV as I hoped (due to both rain delays and only having tennis on one channel locally), I’ve enjoyed keeping up from the sidelines.

I have total sympathy for the ticket holders during the rain delays. There isn’t a lot of covered area at Roland Garros and I have clear memories of what it’s like to huddle under a stairwell while waiting for play to resume.

There hasn’t been too many upsets on the Men’s side. A few that I noted in the first round were Monfils defeated Berdych and Wildcard holder Nick Kyrgios defeated Radek Stepanek. And in the third round Viktor Troiki defeated Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson defeated Milos Raonic.

On the Women’s side, Pavlychenkova and Goerges lost in the first round along with Venus Williams who later withdrew from doubles due back problems, Wozniaki and Na Li in the second.

My biggest highlight was 18 year old wild card holder Aussie Nick Kyrgios defeating Radek Stepanek in the first round. What a huge win for Nick.  Read more.

Here’s some feedback from Twitter peeps

From @FruitflyT21m Monfils beating berdych in 5. Some of his shot making was amazing . Real entertainment !

During the match, Monfils got bored waiting for Gulbis to come back from a bathroom break so he filmed the crowd doing the wave on his mobile phone.

Read more and watch a video of the incident – very funny.

From @SCWTA Sam Stosur’s Unbelievable Winners versus Mladenovic Watch the video.

From @ms_adv  The only huge deal so far to me is Li–with Carlos Rodriguez on board I may add–losing early. The last few games were awful. Read more about the match.

From @Nuha_Magdi Stako taking a pic with his iPhone of disputed ball mark!

From @_The_Scientist  I guess Robredo v. Monfils, this game had brilliant rallies, maybe the match point for Rob, we all love comebacks don’t we

From @A_Gallivant  Monfils’ take down of Berdych & Gulbis, the joy & maturity he showed; crazy ice bath tweets from the players; Marion’s matches.
