Rain Pulls Out of AAMI Classic, now in Doubt for Australian Open

January 15, 2011 By grandslamgal

Blue skies returned to Melbourne around lunchtime on Friday 14 Jan

Best known for making it to the finals of Wimbledon, Rain dominated the AAMI Classic so completely on Thursday that the other players couldn’t even make it onto court.

But yesterday, feeling the anger and frustration of the fans who wanted to see quality tennis at Kooyong, Rain abruptly withdrew around lunch time.

With Rain gone, the semi finals went ahead, with Hewitt beating Davydenko and Monfils defeating Melzer.

Hewitt plays Monfils in the final today, Saturday 15 January.

Sun will be seen throughout the day but Rain has left town, at least for a while.

Because Rain withdrew early enough, Verdasco and Tsonga had time to play a one setter, which Verdasco won.

Verdasco is looking good, and his power play is getting back on track too!

Officials advise that Rain won’t be seen at the early rounds of the Australian Open, with only a chance of a minor appearance at the end of the week.  Let’s hope he stays away.

Until next time
