After a week of smashing men’s tennis at the BNP Paribas Open, we’ve now reached the semi finals.
There were a lot of upsets in the early rounds, with high ranking men dropping like flies; Murray, Ferrer, Tsonga and Baghdatis to name a few.
The semi finals will be played on Saturday 19 March from 11am local time (that’s the wee small hours of Sunday morning in Australia). Here is the order of play.
The men’s semi final players are:
Rafael Nadal v Juan Martin Del Potro
Novak Djokovic v Roger Federer
And if Djokovic beats Federer, he will become the new world No.2 ranked men’s player.
I’m sure Roger, who wants to get back to No.1, will be doing his best to not let that happen!

If you haven’t been able to track the results this week, here’s what happened on the way to the semi finals.
To reach the semi final, Nadal got past:
- R De Voest who retired
- R Sweeting in 2 sets
- S Devvarman in 2 sets (Devvarman beat Baghdatis and Malisse to get to the point of playing Rafa, he’s worth watching out for in future matches)
- I Karlovic in 3 sets, eventually winning a third set tie break
It’s great to see Del Potro in such great form, he beat:
- R Stepanek in 2 sets
- Last year’s champion, I Ljubicic in 3 sets
- A Dolgopolov in 2 sets
- P Kolschreiber in 2 sets
- And Tommy Robredo withdraw from their quarter final match
Although I haven’t been able to watch many of Djokovic’s matches, the score lines are amazing, and he hasn’t dropped a set on the way to the semi final, beating:
- A Golubev
- E Gulbis
- V Troicki
- R Gasquet
Djokovic won the first set of his first three matches 6-0
Federer hasn’t dropped a set either against:
- I Andreev
- J Chela
- R Harrison
- S Wawrinka
For my two cents worth, I’ve picked Djokovic to win the final, but ATP Draw Challenge points aside, I’m hoping it’s Rafa.
