Tennis in March has been all about the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Tournaments played in Indian Wells and Miami.
BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Wrap Up
Roger Federer defeated John Isner to win Indian Wells, making it three titles in a row after Rotterdam and Dubai.
Victoria Azarenka continued her winning streak by defeating Maria Sharapova to win the women’s title. After 26 wins in a row, Vika’s streak ended when she was defeated by Marion Bartoli in the quarter final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Sony Ericsson Open in Miami
The Sony Ericsson Open in Miami is currently underway.
For the men, Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, Roger Federer has won twice in the past, Andy Murray won in 2009 and this is a tourney that Rafael Nadal has never won.
The final result was Djokovic defeating Murray, to win his third Miami title.
- Federer was beaten by Andy Roddick in the third round.
- Nadal had to withdraw from his semi final against Murray due to a knee injury.
For the ladies, Agnieszka Radwanska won the final, defeating Maria Sharapova.
Like Indian Wells, it looks like a fabulous tournament (as shown in the vid below) and one I definitely hope to attend some time in the future.
Caroline Wozniaki, who started the year ranked No.1 and has now dropped to No.6, beat Serena Williams for the first time ever in the Miami quarterfinal. She was then beaten by Maria Sharapova in the semi final.
Venus Williams returned to the tennis court in Miami, making it through to the quarter finals before losing to Agnieszka Radwanska.
Fernando Gonzales retires
Chilean player Fernando Gonzales has now retired. I’ll miss him, having been a fan since his run to the Australian Open final in 2007. Watch this ATP World Tour Fernando Gonzales tribute video featuring Roger, Rafa, Andy M and Nalby.
Rafael Nadal resigned from the ATP player council
Martina Navratilova danced with the stars
Martina Navratilova danced the Fox Trot on the US Dancing with the Stars. Martina was eliminated but check out the video, she looked amazing. And have a look at her dancy red feathery legwear in the pic in this article.
