A fan’s eye view of Day 6 at the Australian Open.
It was huge attendance day at the Australian Open today. Combined day and night crowd was 80,735. Biggest day ever.
On Super Saturday so far, for the ladies, Azarenka dropped a set during her win against Hampton, Serena and Kirilenko won in straight sets, Hobart Champion Vesnina defeated Vinci in 3 as did Kuznetsova over Suarez Navarro.
For the men, Gasquet defeated Dodig in four, Tsonga and Murray had straight sets wins over Kavcic and Berankis, Chardy defeated Del Potro in five and Seppi defeated Cilic, also in five.
Today’s results mean that four French players (Gasquet, Tsonga, Chardy and Simon) will play in Round 4. Impressive.
In the big Rod Laver Arena night match, Tomic played well but Federer was too good, winning a quality match in straight sets.
Monfils v Simon
During their strangely mesmorising, dramatic and quirky Hisense Arena night match, Simon and Monfils played a million long rallies, including one that was 71 shots, the longest of the tournament. Read more in my match review: The Million Rallies of Monfils v Simon.
