There are loads of other people who share the tennis passion and love to blog about it too. [Read more…]

2011 Australian Open: When the roar is over, got to carry on

January 31, 2011 By grandslamgal

For two heady weeks while the Australian Open is on tennis is king of your world.

Blissful days are spent watching tennis live or on TV, scouring the Australian Open website, news sites and tennis blogs, and connecting with other tennis fans on Twitter, Facebook and at Melbourne Park.

It’s all about who’s playing who, who’s wearing what (or not), who did what with their hair, who can dance, who said what to the media, what Todd Woodbridge SMSd to who, who got injured, who was sweating a lot, who carried a blow up kangaroo around Melbourne Park, who is still playing 4 hours and 44 minutes after they started, who had Ana in their player box and who will win and did win the final.

Rog, Raf, Dave, the Andys, Rob, Nole, Dolly, Tom, Nando, Kim, Ana, Caro, the other players and @AustralianOpen are your new best friends and if your friends don’t like talking about tennis, you just don’t see them.

You commit yourself 100% to doing what it takes to keep on watching.

If you’re in another time zone you’re pushing through the tiredness to stay up all night because you can’t bear the thought of missing a minute. After two weeks your body clock is adjusting to Melbourne Eastern Daylight Saving Time and you’ll have difficultly adjusting back.

It’s tennis galore and it feeds your addiction. You need more, more, more.

And for two whole weeks, you get more. A whole new level that’s for sure. Probably the best AO ever.

So many great memories.

Then BAM. It’s all over.

All Over Red Rover.

The Australian Open is finished and there are 50 weeks before it starts again.

You feel lost.

It starts with the tennis blues and then you slip into the GSHO; the Grand Slam Hang Over.*

It feels like you’ve been going hard at an incredible, two week long party, having an amazing time, then, when it’s over you’re left feeling drained, staring listlessly at the TV and catching up on sleep.  But it’s worth it. Oh, so worth it.

The GSHO can last for weeks.

With no government funded GSHO support group to turn to, it’s up to you to deal with the GSHO as best you can. Thank goodness for Twitter so you know you’re not alone in feeling this way.

When the roar is over, you’ve got to carry on.

Tidy up your house, go to the supermarket and read your emails.

Regroup. Re-engage with the non tennis world. Remember the classic moments.

After all, it’s only 50 more weeks until Australian Open 2012.

And the French Open starts on 17 May.  Bring it on!

Australian Open: Thanks for the memories. We’ve had a ball!

January 30, 2011 By grandslamgal

2011 Australian Open

The 2011 Australian Open sure was a whole new level!

Day after day of incredible tennis, media stories, fashions on the field, unexpected upsets and unfortunately, painful injuries.

What a tournament!

Here are the moments that will be remembered.  The good, the bad and the ugly.

  • Men’s Final – Djokovic beats Murray in straight sets, a clear victory for Djokovic and sure, Murray could have played better but am feeling sorry for him having to face the media… he is probably 100% Scottish by now, right? Anyways, the $AUD 1,100,000 runner up prize money should make him feel better.
  • Women’s Final – Kim Clijsters beating Na Li in 3 Sets
  • In her winner speech (no Jada in sight) Kim thanks her dentist, her uncle’s ugly green trousers and says she is now truly “Aussie Kim”. Thanks Kim, looking forward to having you in the Aus Fed Cup team*
  • In her runner up speech, Na Li says to her husband “It doesn’t matter if you are fat or thin, handsome or ugly, I will always follow you and love you”. Bless.
  • The Bryan brothers win their 10th Men’s Doubles title
  • Murray beats Ferrer to go through to the final and becomes even more British
  • The flock of seagulls dive bombing Murray v Ferrer, checking if the umpie had any fish and chips?
  • Penetta and Dulko win their first Women’s Doubles title
  • Justine retires, again
  • Roger, outplayed by Djokovic and out before the final
  • Ana and her stunning smile supporting Djokovic from his player box
  • Na Li going through to the Women’s Final, and her hilarious media interviews joking about her husband and her mum
  • Wounded Rafa refusing to retire injured and losing to Ferrer in the quarter final
  • The Australia Day fireworks
  • Lleyton’s value add to the Channel 7 commentary team*
  • Alicia Molik’s value add to the Channel 7 commentary team*
  • Rennae Stubbs retires from playing tennis, hope she keeps commentating!*
  • The consistently good weather, if occasionally on the cold side, previously unheard of!
  • Dolgopolov, his girlish yet secure hair band, and his be-u-ti-ful play
  • Caro, the media and the kangaroo tale
  • Shiavone and Kuznetsova, incredible tennis, longest women’s match ever
  • Bionic qualifier Raonic makes it through to Round 4 – he’s definitely one to watch
  • Rafa’s Armanic pics, mmmmmmm
  • The middle Saturday getting sold out, 77000+ people attending
  • Rafa’s Nike shirts, and his bigger Nike shirts, and his shirt changes
  • Dolgopolov beating Soderling in 5 sets – didn’t see that coming
  • Berdych versus Verdasco and the big match that wasn’t
  • Berdych, dressed like a ball boy
  • Verdasco, his mo-hawk and impressively powerful hair product
  • Petko, dancing after the comprehensive win over Sharapova – In our poll, 91% of people love the Petko-Dance, the other 9% aren’t sure what to think
  • Sam Stosur, losing to Petra Kvitova, not the home slam she was looking for
  • Roddick in his magic red toed shoes, loses to Wawrinka
  • Aussie boy Tomic and his glasses
  • Marin Cilic beats John Isner in the 5 set battle of the big serves
  • That dead spot in Hisense arena
  • Del Potro, defeated by Baghdatis in the first week, doesn’t make the big come back he was looking for. Please be OK in the long run though Delpo
  • Hewitt, loses a huge battle with Nalbandian in Round 1 – not the Australian Open title he was looking for
  • Venus, retires injured against Petkovic
  • Venus, the black studded mesh zipper combo ouftit, the yellow criss cross pie style number and plastic zippered top
  • Caro’s ballet /netball combo dress
  • Djokovic dancing with the Star
  • That text message that Todd sent to Stubbsy about Kim
  • Baghdatis, withdraws injured against Melzer due to an issue with his finger
  • Troiki withdraws against Djokovic due to stomach issues
  • Nandbandian, withdraws against Berankis, because everything is moving around
  • There’s something about Berankis and his power serve, he’s definitely one to watch
  • All those epic 5 set matches in the early rounds esp Federer v Simon
  • All the names badly pronouned on TV; Gilles Simone, Marion Cilic, Michael Youzhny, David Fera, what the?*
  • Mahut, just because, and because I’d love to see him styled by Venus
  • Dinara’s comprehensive defeat by Kim, 6-0, 6-0
  • Ana’s defeated in a battle against Makarova
  • The Rally for Relief, tennis players supporting the Queensland flood victims

* I’m in Australia so a few local references appear in the list.

Special mention goes to Twitter

Firstly @AustralianOpen The account grew from around 15,000 followers to 27,000 during the tournament, which is testament to the fabulous tweeting; comprehensive, all inclusive and endlessly entertaining!

Secondly, to all the other tennis tweeters. I have to say that I enjoyed the tweeting as much as the tennis.

The View from Margaret Court arena

Thanks Australian Open and everyone involved for putting on such a great show. I’ll be back next year. No question.

Tennis Bloggers, Tell Us About Your Blog…Please!

January 27, 2011 By grandslamgal

Blogging is alive and well amongst tennis fans, and it’s awesome.

I’ve read so many fabulous articles this January in the lead up to, and during, the 2011 Australian Open.  They are all brilliant – worthy of fireworks!

It seems like everyone has their tennis blogging niche. I’ve read blogs about match reviews, the schedule of play, predicting who will win, the post match interviews, videos of the highlights, what the players are doing in their spare time, as well as who’s wearing what or doing what with their hair.

I’m planning to write an article (or two) about Tennis Blogs and Tennis Bloggers.

If you’d like your blog to be included, just leave a comment below and include these details:

  • Name of your blog
  • URL
  • Your tennis niche eg what kinds of topics you write about
  • Your Twitter user name
  • How you most want your readers to receive your blog articles eg via Twitter, subscribe via email, RSS feed etc
  • Anything else you’d like to share.

If you’re new to blogging and looking for a way for your readers to Subscribe to your blog, try Feedburner, it offers both RSS feed and email. (I don’t think RSS Readers are as big in Australia as they are in the USA and other parts.)

Personally, I love Mail Chimp for a RSS to email feed because you can customise your email template and add a header image. Plus it’s free until your list reaches 1000 subscribers.

Interested in Guest Blogging?

Guest blogging is a way to build links for SEO, and give your blog more exposure. If you’re interested in guest blogging for this Grand Slam Gal blog I’d love to discuss the options, particularly if you’re going to the French Open, Wimbledon or the US Open this year.

Looking forward to finding out more about your blog in the comments.

Cheers

Grand Slam Gal

P.S. Please help spread the word to other tennis bloggers by re-tweeting this article 🙂
